Ribonucleic Acid Freak Out




My taste in music is ever-changing. I’d be hard pressed to name more than a few albums that hold my interest as intently today as when I first heard them. Robot Hive/Exodus is one of those albums. This is the first album that saw Clutch adding the Hammond Organ into the mix. I wouldn’t normally describe Clutch as being a very experimental band, every now and then they do something off-kilter like adding horns and flirting with jazz on their instrumental “Crackerjack”, but they have a style and they seem to stick with it. However, this album’s mantra is best summarized by the song “Never Be Moved”, which compels the listener to “Get your evolution on.”

The album starts off with “The Incomparable Mr. Flannery”. A song that outlines what appears to be a couple running from the law in the worst possible getaway vehicle. The groove that they tapped into on this song is so undeniably infectious it’s hard to resist the urge to dance awkwardly to it; couple that with Fallon’s lyrics and the use of the Hammond organ to accentuate the riffs and you have a top-notch way to start an album.

“Burning Beard” was the single from this album, which surprisingly placed fairly high on an end of year vote of the top “metal” music videos on Fuse. I like this song for two reasons. The drum work is just phenomenal, it’s hard not to attempt to drum along to it and look like an idiot. Secondly, the vocals sound like Fallon is a crazed prophet, preaching madly for anyone that will enter the nondenominational house of Clutch. His surreal lyrics really force this message home “every time I look out my window, same three dogs looking back at me” “every time I open my window cranes fly in to terrorize me” “the power of the holy ghost (woof woof woof), the power of the holy ghost, pas auf” The music video really captures this as it shows the band playing in front of a congregation of robots in an idyllic country church.

The third track is “Gullah” and this is where the gospel influence really starts to shine through. This is the point of the album where the addition of an organ player really starts to shine through. The bass line in this song is so fluid and really lays a strong foundation for the song. Again, as is the case for every track on this album, the lyrics are just on another level of amazing. Mentions of Jesus, American Bandstand, and yellow cake seem to paint an interesting picture of American culture and the line “scaling up the heights of folly” always appeared to be a succinct way of describing American foreign policy at the time. I don’t know if Fallon meant this song to be a criticism of sorts and that’s the beauty of it.

“Mice and Gods”, another song another handful of lyrics I can’t help but love. “Silver women on the Omni magazine, they got the future laid out precisely as I need”. OMNI magazine was a swcifi/science magazine that ran from the 70’s into the 90’s based on the covers alone (www.omnimagazineonline.com) it’s definitely something I would have enjoyed reading. The line “engineer the future now, damn tomorrow, future now, throw the switched, prime the charge, yesterday’s for mice and gods.” Is just so insanely catchy to me, and who can’t help but feel like that at times.

Pulaski Skyway is the fifth track, and one that I love to listen to. This was one of the first songs I learned in full on bass, and one of a handful of songs that I was able to cover in full with a “band” even if it was just for ourselves in a garage. The opening guitar lick is just perfect. Lyrics such as “art class for the bourgeoisie, lab rats for the cat” and mentions of mole people, Jimmy Hoffa, Andy Warhol and CBGBs are nice pop-culture references.

“Never Be Moved” this is the song that I feel best sums up the album, it feels like some weird religious after-party. You can hear the gospel influence in full effect, the bluesy groove of the song is ever apparent, and just enough Clutch quirkiness is thrown in for good measure. Charles Darwin is dubbed a saint and references to Sleestack are thrown in for good measure. “Aint no tellin’ how much longer, but we will never, we will never be moved” I can’t help but identify with that lyric at times.

“10001110101” Yes, that is the title of the song. If “Never Be Moved” is a party after Clutch was done preaching the gospel of groove, this song is the audio of the sermon that went down moments before. This is the song that got me into Clutch when I heard it on the MusicChoice cable channel. “Ribonucleic acid freak outs, possible references to Hello-Kitty, and the most unlikely catchy chorus ever make this song a stand-out. The next 3 songs “Small Upsetters”, “Circus Maximus”, and “Tripping the Alarm” flow into each other so neatly and so organically it’s hard not to get lost in them. Mentions of Cthulhu, paparazzi, and the beast with two backs are lyrical highlights in Circus Maximus.

If previous songs flirted with their gospel influence, “10,000 Witnesses” is where the band fully embraces it. It appears to be the tale of a man that had recently escaped execution and stumbles upon a big tent religious revival where snake handling is practiced.

The last three songs are fairly hit or miss for me, Land of Pleasant Living doesn’t do too much for me, Gravel Road is an amazing delta blues cover and the midpoint of the song is jaw-dropping to experience live. Who’s Been Talking is another blues cover which I have never really enjoyed and usually end the album at Gravel Road.


Needless to say I can't wait to see them next month.

Untitled

I've had this past bit of writing sitting on my laptop since the end of the summer. I'm not sure where I want it to go and I don't see being able to change it any more than I already have. I'm not one hundred percent satisfied with it, but I'm sick of knowing it's sitting around. It feels more like a collection of scenes than a true narrative, but that's how things go sometimes.


Eltonto lived in the center of town. His house was surrounded by many others, all very similar to his own. However, unlike these houses, his possessed something of interest. Eltonto’s home was flanked by a sprawling garden. In the center of this garden grew a tree. Its time worn bark a canvas, its thriving leaves, a welcome source of shade. Eltonto was always a dreamer. However, he did not possess a very sharp memory. Nor did he posses much by way of artistic talent, but that didn’t stop him from immortalizing his dreams in the side of the proud tree. For years he carved and chiseled every dream, every promise, and every hope into the trees hardened flesh. Although Eltonto’s dreams were very bold, they never did bear fruit, and neither did the tree. That is, until one day when the sun struck the tree’s canopy, creating shadows that danced atop the garden’s floor. As these shadowed dancers skirted the green stage of Eltonto’s lawn, he looked up to see one lone fruit.


The tree’s branch slowly bent downward, offering up its prize. Eltonto, never one to refuse a gift, grasped for it eagerly. His hands cradled the offering, and to his amazement it seemed to emit a red glow. Quickly, Eltonto rubbed his eyes; this did nothing but cause the fruit’s aura to blur out of focus. As his sight returned, Eltonto slowly lowered himself to the ground, using the tree’s trunk as a guide. Carefully, Eltonto used the sleeve of his shirt to polish his newly acquired jewel. After it was cleaned to his liking, Eltonto eagerly bit into the fruit. To his disappointment it wasn’t very sweet, nor was it very bitter. As far as fruit goes, his tongue had tasted far better. Yet, he was compelled to finish it. Tired from his unexpected snack, Eltonto slid further down, using the tree’s base as a brace, and his shoulder as a pillow.


He wasn’t sure how long he had been sleeping, but Eltonto was certain he couldn’t have been there for very long. Shaking the last remnants of sleep from his head, Eltonto groggily surveyed the area. While he had fallen asleep surrounded by shade, he awakened to find himself cradled by the tree’s boughs. Normally, he’d be happy for an excuse to languish in his garden a bit more. However, he couldn’t help but be disturbed by this turn of events. As he began prodding for a way out, the tree let out a disapproving groan. Quickly, its branches coalesced to form a wall, causing Eltonto to let out a defeated sigh. Dismayed, Eltonto shrugged his shoulders and rested his head against the tree’s side.


While English isn’t a tree’s native tongue, it has countless years to pick up a few words. Although it may be a bit more rigid, tree English is more or less comprehendible if you listen closely enough. Most trees only possess a limited vocabulary, gleaned from the menagerie of visitors that use the base of their trunk as a place to rest. From children exploring its crevices in search of crawling insects, to young lovers exploring each other’s words; trees are privy to much exploring, even if they are rooted to the ground.


This particular tree’s name was Leif. He had watched Eltonto build his home, and he had looked on as Eltonto paced his garden during many a sleepless night. Most importantly, he had allowed Eltonto to carve every detail of his dreams into his side. He never did protest, in fact he enjoyed the slow unveiling of each scene. As Leif explained all this, Eltonto couldn’t help but yawn. While talking trees are pretty interesting, it takes them far too long to say much of anything. Finally, as night began to fall Leif got around to telling Eltonto why he had kept him as his guest. You see, Leif wasn’t an ordinary tree, he was a Pine tree and as fate would have it, he was adept at helping others discover that which they longed for. Since Eltonto had done his fair share of pining over the past few days, Leif felt it would only be neighborly of him to give him a hand. As Leif explained all this Eltonto’s eyes widened. His crude scrawling had begun to glow. Outlined by golden fire, they reached for him. As he watched their flicker become a raging fire, he couldn’t help but smile as he felt himself become drawn into Leif’s moss covered hide.


After a slight bout of nausea and a bit of dizziness Eltonto was feeling like himself again. However, instead of sitting in his garden underneath a tree, he found himself in the middle of a sprawling field. To his immediate left was a dog. His fur was a fiery red, his eyes a wooden brown and around his neck was a collar. Emblazoned into this collar were all of Eltonto’s etchings. While he was a pine tree upon first inspection in our world, it turns out he was truly a dogwood. Eltonto couldn’t help but chuckle. Without a word, Leif began to saunter off, following the snaking body of a nearby stream. Situated next to the stream was a mirror. Emblazoned with precious gems, the mirror appeared emit its own light, as if it were unsatisfied in reflecting the light of its surroundings. Peering into the mirror Eltonto witnessed a vaguely familiar scene unfold. The mirror revealed a king; he looked like Eltonto, but his hair was grayed and his stomach protruding. The king’s appetite for gold was unmatched; everything in his palace was coated in the precious metal. His meals were served by autonomous robots, made entirely of solid gold. The din of their clattering joints reverberated against the castle’s barren walls. Engineered by the king himself these servants were trusted to do his every bidding. However, the king did not have this same trust for his human subjects. So he had them all encased in gold and placed in his courtyard to act as monuments to his paranoia. As the days stretched on the king yearned for someone to talk to, but try as he might he couldn’t get his robotic servants to oblige him. Dismayed, he placed his chin on his hand and sat, unmoving in his seat.


As a young man Eltonto had always wanted to be a king. However, the mirror did not paint a satisfying scene. A small house with a private garden would have to do. As Eltonto contemplated this, a peculiar man rose from the river. As his head breached the surface of the flowing water, his crown sparkled in the sunlight, and his robes clung to him like wet rags. Closer inspection revealed it to be Eltonto, only more kingly. Happy to have company, Leif and Eltonto welcomed their new companion and invited him to join them. The king begrudgingly accepted, but before he would accompany them he made sure to grasp his gold crown securely in his hand.
Their pace was slowed considerably by the silent king. Not only was he weighed down by his gold plated robe, he would constantly stop the party to inspect any object that glimmered or shone brightly. Unfortunately, no matter how vigilant he was in his search, he never did find any more of his favorite metal. Following the river, made the journey easy. Just up ahead a small plume of smoke could be seen rising from some unseen source. Leif’s tail wagged as he informed his companions that their next stop was just up ahead.


The factory that rose up to greet our travelers was less than hospitable. Sitting like a blemish next to the rolling blue stream, it emitted endless streams of noxious fumes. The inside of the factory was unbearably hot due to its never-ending parade of production. Furnaces roared as conveyor belts whisked along the empty husks of mechanical men. The men running the line were every bit as mechanical as the machinery they controlled. Sunken eyes and sallow cheeks stared blankly forward as they worked day in and day out. These gaunt men were unmistakably familiar. Sure enough they looked just like Eltonto. During his first days in his village, Eltonto had always longed to work in the city. It promised steady work and decent pay. Unfortunately, he never could obtain work there, so he had to be content doing odd jobs around town. Disheartened by dredging up memories of dashed dreams, Eltonto exited the factory. Regrouping outside the oppressive factory, the weary band of travelers was surprised to discover one of the workers had decided to join them. With a half hearted grunt he removed his cap and shook off the soot that had nestled on top of his head. Feeling properly acquainted he fell back behind Eltonto and Leif. The king, having decided his new companion was anything but trustworthy, gripped his crown even tighter.


Eltonto knew they were nearing the final leg of their journey before Leif even had a chance to say so. He was the one that had carved all of these scenes after all. Unfortunately, this last locale would be the most painful to visit. The scene was idyllic enough, a small home sat nestled in the countryside, surrounded by a white picket fence. A well manicured lawn sprawled out from the home’s front steps. The walkway which led from the front gate to the house was lined by an array of different flowers, each more brilliant than the last. Outside the home lay a fattened cat. As our motley band of travelers approached the front door, the languid feline raised its head and flashed them its best Cheshire smile. Shaken, Eltonto opened the door, fearing what he would see next. The door opened without resistance, but could not help but emit a low groan as our guests entered the home. Sitting in a large rocking chair was a woman. Eltonto never could figure out what she looked like. Her back initially turned to them; she slowly contorted her spine to greet her unexpected guests. Her face was completely featureless; her hair lay flatly against the porcelain of her barren countenance. Cradled in her hands laid a picture book, its spine was cracked and its pictures were bent and weathered by age. Unable to bear any more, Eltonto quickly turned on his heels to leave.


Knowing that each of his etchings had been explored, Eltonto was ready to return home. However, Leif announced that there was but one more stop. Unable to endure any more time in this new world, Eltonto began the short trek back to where his journey began. Oddly, Leif did not offer any resistance. After a quiet march back the travelers reached their final destination. Sitting where their journey had begun was a rather large box. Atop it was a bow constructed from the branches of the tree which had started this whole ordeal. Moving in closer to inspect the box each traveler marveled at the deep red color of its sides. In a flash the large cube unhinged itself, opening its mouth to reveal a jagged maw. Without hesitation it swallowed the king whole and chewed the factory man to a fine pulp. Standing aghast, Eltonto was forced to close his eyes as a fine crimson mist permeated the meadow’s tranquil air. Its hunger sated the present disappeared, leaving Eltonto to stand in silence next to Leif. Motionless, Eltonto stared into the distance. Despite what he had just witnessed, the fool couldn’t help but smile as the silhouettes of newly approaching dreams appeared on the horizon.

Rotation Retrospective - CVS

Who knew I'd be so happy while working just shy of 60 hours a week? Rotations are funny things, your experience is really dependent on your preceptor and the other people working there. I can't stand when people complain about work when they're at their job. I understand life and work can be stressful, but bitching and moaning isn't going to do anything to make it any less so. Luckily, my first site was full of friendly, helpful people. My preceptors were more than willing to answer any question I had and gave me enough varied assignments to keep my time there interesting. The store was busy a good amount of the time and I found myself running around as if I were working at my own store, not because they were telling me to do so, but because I wanted to help them out.

Anyway, while I could go on about how great the store was, a few interesting things did happen. I was told I looked like my preceptor three times. I seriously can't escape this, I sometimes wonder just how common my face looks. Towards the end of the rotation I was helping out at drop off and a burly old guy approaches with a couple of scripts. He says "hey good lookin', mind filling these for me?" I turn expecting one of the female techs to be behind me, but alas no one was near me. I got a good chuckle out of that.

I also found out just how small pharmacy is. My second week there, a floater pharmacist came in and it turns out I had worked with him at my store when I began working there last year. Further cementing the small size of pharmacy in my mind, a trainee pharmacist that was working at my rotation site is good friends with 2 of the pharmacist at my home store.

While I'm still not 100% sold on community pharmacy in my mind, I am happy that I had the opportunity to work with a great group of people outside of my store. With that said, I'm really looking forward to LIJ in February.

On a completely unrelated note, I do hope to update with a "new" (started it at the end of my summer break and never got around to finishing) attempt at writing...assuming LIJ doesn't completely eat all my spare time.

2010 A Year in Music

I haven't kept up with new releases as much as I would like and I'm not the best at reviewing anything. With that said, I think I'm going to try and compile my 5 favorite releases this year...in list form.


5) School of Seven Bells - Disconnect From Desire. There was a stretch of a few weeks this Autumn where I listened to this album every morning without fail. The vocals are soothing, the guitars are swirling and the drumming is non offensive. This is shoegaze with hooks, it's not just dream pop.

Standout Track- Windstorm




4) Torche - Songs For Singles. Torche play a brand of sludge metal that is so catchy it has drawn comparisons to Foo Fighters. With songs clocking in at an average of about 2 minutes, this album says a lot in a short span of time.

Standout Track- Arrowhead


3) The Damned Things - Ironiclast. Take members of Fall Out Boy, Every Time I Die and Anthrax. Sounds a bit...different and it is. The band takes the metalcore tinged blues rock of Every Time I Die and tempers it with all the catchiness you'd expect two members of Fall Out Boy to provide. This album is FUN, as are the next 2 coming up.

Standout Track(s)- Black Heart, We've Got a Situation Here, Bad Blood, Little Darling. (The whole album is amazing, do yourself a favor and pick it up)



2) My Chemical Romance - Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.
Killjoys make some noise. This isn't just an introduction, it's a rallying cry. This album is infectious, it's loud, it's fun and it's colorful. MCR really have created a fun ROCK album. The term "emo" should be purged from your vocabulary. Ian MacKaye hated it when Fugazi was called emo and I can't help but cringe when the term gets thrown around haphazardly. MCR was never an emo band, they've always been more of an arena rock band with a few punk tendencies. Really, I'm not sure what emo even means. Anyway, small rant aside, this album has really connected with me. I really hope it wins over some people for the band, but with the way most people feel about them I doubt it'll happen. Regardless, this album is gold, Jerry. GOLD!

Standout Tracks: SING; Planetary (GO!); Party Poison; Save Yourself, I'll Hold Them Back. (Just like The Damned Things, the whole album is amazing. You're doing yourself a disservice by avoiding this one.)



1) DEVO- SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY


Devo is an odd creature. They created one of the first music videos and became pop culture idols in a seeming instant. Unfortunately their unique image ("flowerpots", biohazard suits, overwhelming nerdiness) distracted people from the infectious synth AND guitar driven music they were pumping out. Mark Mothersbaugh and company may be in their 60's (or close to it), but they've released an album that shames bands a third their age, and they've done it 40 years into their career. This album truly has something for everybody. SFE features guitar-driven, anthemic tracks like Fresh, it has 8-bit sounds reminiscent of Crystal Castles (Mind Games), it has 50's sounding "whoaa oh oh ohhhs" (Please Baby Please), it even has a piano ballad (No Place Like Home). Take all these tracks, throw in some pop culture awareness and the Devo quirk factor("cheeseburger, cheeseburger, pumping gas" manages to be catchy and an accurate portrayal of American life) and it produces something special.

Stand Out Tracks- Fresh, Please Baby Please, Mind Games, Human Rocket, No Place Like Home, What We Do, Don't Shoot (I'm a Man), March On, Later is Now. The whole album is standout aside from Cameo, which admittedly fell a bit flat for me.

Sing Macabre Songs and We'll Dance 'Til Dawn

We're halfway through October. The air's getting colder and Halloween is fast approaching. That means only one thing, I get to make the most kick-ass playlist ever.

1. Misfits- Dig Up Her Bones. Yeah, yeah the Misfits aren't the Misfits without Danzig. Although I prefer Danzig era stuff as a whole, this is probably my favorite Misfits song.

2. Bauhaus- Dark Entries. It's Bauhaus, one of the most important 80's goth bands. Peter Murphy is some sort of weird cross between David Bowie and the Count from Sesame Street. Perfect.

3. My Chemical Romance- The Ghost of You. Ghosts. Lost love. Yeah, this song belongs here.

4. Christian Death- Deathwish. More 80's goth/deathrock. This song always reminded me of the Smashing Pumpkins, which is also an activity that you can really only do on Halloween. ohohoho so funny.

5. Type O Negative- Wolf Moon. A song about menstrual blood turning the protagonist into a werewolf.

6. Cradle of Filth- Nymphetamine. A lot of people seem to have trouble admitting they like this band. A lot of people take themselves too seriously.

7. Emilie Autumn- Liar. "I want to mix our blood and put it in the ground, so you will never leave."

8. I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness- Last Ride Together. "All of your friends are now ghosts". Joy Division with a hint of The Cure and some Interpol thrown in for good measure.

9. Lady Gaga- Monster. This one seems self explanatory.

10. My Bloody Valentine- Loveless. So ethereal, yet so harsh. This song just feels like autumn to me.

11. Neutral Milk Hotel- Two-headed Boy. I can't think of a reason for this to be here, other than the title. But, I like it so it stays. MY LIST, MY RULES.

12. Nine Inch Nails- Reptile. She splits herself wide open to let the insects in. The version with Peter Murphy on vocals is even more "Halloween".

13. Oingo Boingo- Dead Man's Party. This one is obvious without even going into the whole Danny Elfman Tim Burton connection. The man sang as Jack Skellington, what more do you want?

14. Rasputina- Transylvanian Concubine. Looking forward to seeing this live on the 23rd.

15. Revolting Cocks- Hookerbot3000. I don't know if robotic hookers are Halloween material, but I think it would be an interesting costume. Plus, the song makes me laugh.

16. Sex Gang Childre- Sebastiane. Invader Zim decided he wanted to do vocals for an 80's goth band and I have no problem with that.

17. She Wants Revenge- Out of Control. This band seems like such a by the numbers approximation of a goth/indie/post-punk band, yet they still sound amazingly fresh to me. Can't get enough.

18. Siouxsie- Into a Swan. It's goddamn Siouxsie, no explanation will be given.

19. Skinny Puppy- Dig It. Watch just about any live clip of theirs, it's a horror show set to music.

20. The Birthday Massacre- Lovers End. "In the cellar buried six feet deep
The lover's shaken from a dreamless sleep
Nails clawing splinters from the ceiling and floor
Shrieking like the witches 'til his stitches are sore"

21. The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets- Power Up. A song about would-be superheroes. The lyrics remind me of Kick-Ass and Watchmen. Fun stuff.

22. The Sisters of Mercy- Lucretia My Reflection. I enjoy the name Lucretia. It helps that Andrew Eldritch has the perfect voice for this type of thing.

23. White Zombie- More Human Than Human. What Halloween would be complete without White Zombie?

24. Clutch- Day of the Jackalope. A jackalope is described in American folklore as a jackrabbit with the antlers of a deer.
"Well, my senses are sharpened
I'm half in the bag
I got a Cheshire smile and
A five cent rag." Neil Fallon has never written a lyric I didn't like.

25. Type O Negative- All Hallows Eve. This is THE Halloween song. Man loses love so he decides to learn an ancient spell and make a pact with the devil to try and bring her back. Mentions of pumpkins, howls, screams and other Halloweeny things. It also kind of reminds me of The Corpse Bride, but in reverse.

Zdzisław Beksiński




Zdzisław Beksiński was described as a pleasant, shy man. His art certainly didn't convey this. His life wasn't pleasant either, his wife died a year before his son committed suicide, on Christmas Eve. Sadly Beksiński was murdered by his caretaker's son for refusing him a small loan equal to about 100 dollars.

I had stumbled upon a few of his paintings over the years and was always intrigued by them, but never knew the name of their creator. Surprisingly, I found

But She Was Born A Dragonfly.


Imagine Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and AC/DC getting together and jamming. Now throw in Walt Whitman on lyrics and you have a feel for what Clutch is all about. I credit this band with being one of the biggest influences on my musical taste. While I still listen to hardcore punk and thrash, I'm no longer all about FAST HEAVY FAST!, those high school days are behind me for better or worse. The other groups that I would say that have had just as great an impact on my listening habits are Type O Negative and Devo, but that's for another post.

Anyway, Clutch's style has been constantly evolving, what started as a hardcore band straight from the DC "scene" which covered Bad Brains songs and sounded like the bastard child of Helmet and Unsane, has since transformed into a bluesy rock band. While I do love all of their releases, Elephant Riders will always remain my favorite album. In fact, I'm quite comfortable saying it's my favorite album of all time.

So what is "The Elephant Riders"? It's an album loosely based around an alternate reality where Abraham Lincoln accepted the King of Siam's offer to provide the Union with a herd of War Elephants. I said it was loosely based on that because the song topics range from talking about a man who has been chased by a witch for as long as he can remember, to a song that describes spring through the eyes of a dragonfly. The whole album feels as if Black Sabbath decided they needed to be funkier. Plus the whole lyrics thing. Did I mention I love Neil Fallon's lyrics?
